Are you good at writing stories?

When filing an R&D tax claim many people focus on the numbers: resource allocation to the project, material costs involved, percentages of utilities and technology.  What we have found is the area most neglected is often the claim's downfall....the narrative.

HMRC has issued guidance on the R&D tax claim narrative, and included a template for companies and claims advisors to use, signaling the importance of this element of the R&D tax claim.

Interestingly for our Senior Tax Accountant, Dr Andrew Jupp, who oversees all of our R&D tax credit claims, this template is nearly identical to the one we have been using for our claims for years.

"Our experience has shown that the narrative element of the R&D tax claim is vital to telling HMRC the story of the R&D journey," notes Dr Jupp.  "It's our ability to understand the client's journey and tell that story effectively, ticking al the boxes for HMRC, which has resulted in our high success rate for R&D tax claims."
